utilitaire 10 of 12: a-go-go

Riding across the Riverside Drive glass bridge in Chattanooga always gives me an imaginary sense of victory(?) over cars.  I love standing on that bridge with my bike and looking down at the cars driving underneath; I am looming over them for a change (even it it’s only in my mind…).

Today’s destination was number 12 on the Utilitaire control card: to get my hair cut.  My once-a-month-or-so trip to Chattanooga to visit my stylist, Chris, at Hair-A-Go-Go gives me a chance to ride into the city on the Riverwalk.

I will confess, I have to drive (shame on me!) to the northern terminus of the Riverwalk from home; but living about 40+ mi outisde of the city, an 80-mile round trip would be a big stretch for a reasonable commuter distance for me. Sorry. This way, anyway, I cut a little off of my driving distance, and get to ride the  “scenic route” into downtown, and have some time to enjoy the destination.    I think the approximate distance from the north end of the path to the Bluff View Art District downtown is about 8 miles one way, so the round trip  makes  for a relaxing and comfortable ride which I almost always make on Elisabetta.

Got my haircut, stopped into the downtown art supply store for a new pen, and then lingered around Coolidge Park for a little while enjoying the incredible sunshine and the balmy temperatures.  I think we reached the mid-70’s.  Lots and lots of people were out, walking, biking, sitting on benches on the Walnut Street Bridge, enjoying picnics in the park.

Before heading back, I stopped to treat myself at Rembrand’s Coffee House in the Art District.  I was in the mood for one of their blackberry Italian Cream Sodas …  it was heavenly, especially on the warm day.  I am not exactly sure what makes it “Italian” (because I don’t remember ever seeing anything like this in Italy), but it is basically blackberry syrup, soda water, and some cream – yes, real cream – over ice.  Not something to indulge in on a regular basis, but for an occasional treat, I shall have no guilt over it(!).

My hair is back to it’s short and trimmed state, my journal enjoyed the sun and the park (if not my attempts with the new pen), and I am still imagining the sweetness of blackberries and cream.  A few scenes from the day … and a big thank you to the very kind new friends who have visited these pages from today’s Freshly Pressed; it was an unexpected surprise, and I am quite bowled over by the kind words and responses.  Many thanks.

‘family’ portraits

OK … not really family portraits, but I get a lot of teasing that I take more photos of my bikes, especially Elisabetta, than I do of my kids these days.  It’s actually the reason I bought her.  (Kidding…).

Another lovely fall day riding around Chattanooga.  Had some errands to run, did some shopping, enjoyed a lovely lunch with my beloved (human, not bicycle), took some time to doodle and take pictures.  You should all know by know, it’s what I do – mastering the art of goofing off….

Getting to be that time of year again… The tangy, musty smell of leaves crunching underfoot – and under my wheels.  The colors of pumpkins, gourds and chrysanthemums.  Apples and cider and cinnamon-spiced pastries.  The shrinking of daylight, wind rattling the tree branches, geese on the pond.   Just some photos… 🙂

Happy Valentine’s Day to the beloved ones near and dear to your heart … including your bicycle. 🙂

detours

sled 🙂

The snow stuck around longer than most people expected, thanks to some nice cold temps.  It was some amazingly beautiful riding – cold, sunny, snow on the ground.  The kind of weather that stirs my blood.  Too often, I find that I want to spend the entire day outside messing around – on my bike, with the camera and a coffee stop or two.  And then the responsibilities of real life throw a detour sign in the road, and I find it unavoidable to have to park the bike and get on with it.

contemplating snow tires... ?

The past week was one of those detours – even though I was riding every day, the daily focus was on “the other stuff”. The mundane things like appointments and errands that had been put off a little too long.  Projects at home that needed attention, trips that required me to use a car.  Sigh.

brightness

I’ve had a few days this week where the riding was barely more than a 15 minute spin up the road, but I’ve come to really appreciate that benefit, that reward, of #330daysofbiking over the months.  Taking the time, no matter how brief it may be, to get outside and pedal around away from the other necessary things – a detour in itself – is the great equalizer, the balance to the mundane.

As I write this today, the snow has almost all disappeared.  And I miss it.  I still have a sizable to-do list of non-cycling things to detour me during the next few weeks, but I’m always glad for the daily reward of #330daysofbiking.  The official count as of today:  have ridden 270 of the past 299 days, 66 days remain.

bike toys

head tube clock

We watch things come and go … and come back again.  “Vintage” and “retro” are everywhere – from fashion trends to digital photo apps and beyond. My son now wears glasses a la Buddy Holly, and despite his iPodery, he’s been collecting old vinyl records and plays them on a turntable.  Myself, I’m smitten with the lo-fi grainy look of photos from plastic toy film cameras, and have always loved vintage bikes.

And so, when I spotted this Stem Captain analog headset clock in the bike shop, I knew this was a toy I had to have.  While digital trip computers and hi-tech toys may be the order of the day for “serious” bikes, I felt that this was just the right accessory for Elisabetta.

adventures of StupidGirl

thinks I need a knee helmet (?)

Put a beautiful afternoon, a beautiful bicycle, and very stupid girl together and what do you get?   (Yeah … can I please get a do-over?)

The good news: appears to be no fracture, which should be confirmed today by the radiologist – just a scraped knee the size of a grapefruit and a heart-breaking abrasion on my beautiful Elisabetta. (Sniff…).  Fortunately limited to the front carrier – basically no other scratches on her.   But still, the bike injury weighs on me more than the knee.  I have been assured, however, that she can be rehabilitated (both my husband and nephew are skilled in auto restoration, bodywork).

I don’t even have a spectacular story behind this; it was just a big dose of stupid.  Riding on an empty and quiet neighborhood street, no traffic, nothing around, … a moment of inattention, a slip of the front wheel off the edge of the pavement, and an over-correcting cartwheel.  All at the speed of about <2 mph.  Yes, I am talented.  (And yes, I always wear a helmet).

And I think I heard a couple of squirrels laughing.

my poor, poor Elisabetta ….

For today, it is no riding for StupidGirl … just ice and some couch-time with a book and FoodNetwork.  But here are a few of the pictures from the beautiful day it was (pre-crash).

*Note:  No small animals (or camera equipment) were harmed during this mishap.  Thankfully.

losing daylight

twilight with cows

I love this time of year.  And I don’t.  The air is cool, dry and crisp … the leaves are falling … the mornings are edged with frost.  And it gets dark much too early.

While the squirrels hide away nuts and acorns, I’m filled with the urge to cook and bake.  Pumpkin and spice muffins, soups, squashes.  Warm and fragrant comfort foods – the things I crave after being outside and riding in the cool weather.

The #330daysofbiking count:  have ridden 203 of the past 223 days; 144 days remaining.  Ride on. 😀
